SummerArts

June 23* -July 18, 2008

Now in our 18th year, SummerARTS is a unique 4-week multidisciplinary arts program for children ages 4-14 that celebrates diversity and creative self-expression.

SummerARTS is conveniently located downtown at CMCB’s lively, air-conditioned, T-accessible South End facility. Our professional artist-educators and counselors give exceptional attention to each child, with a youth-staff ratio of 4:1. Each day, SummerARTS classes include:

  • Music – including singing, song-games and dances, rhythm instrument playing, and pennywhistle, recorder and dulcimer instruction;
  • Visual art – including drawing, painting, weaving, papermaking, sculpture, mask and jewelry-making;
  • Movement and dance – from jazz, modern and hip-hop to folk dance;
  • Creative dramatics – including improvisation, pantomime, creating plays, drama games and storytelling.

Special activities include a visit from a professional performing group, a cultural field trip, city cookout, festival evening performance for participants and their parents featuring songs, dances, dramatic presentations and artwork created by students.

Program costs include 19 days of instruction, all related activities, snacks, performances, instrument usage, field trips, SummerARTS signature T-shirt and memory book. Program hours generally run from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon,a morning snack included. Extended day programming is available, as well as:

  • LittleARTS, for babies and toddlers ages 4-16 months, accompanied by an adult caregiver. LittleARTS is an interactive introduction to music-making using folk traditions of song and dance.
  • YoungARTS (for children ages 2-3 years old), including singing, visual art, creative movement.

A counselor-in-training (CIT) program is available for students ages 11-14. In addition to assisting in SummerARTS activities, CITs receive instruction in visual art, drama, dance and voice.
